Average dips at Karaka National Weanling Sale

A FIRST-CROP son of the Red Ransom stallion Duporth headed the opening day of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Weanling and Broodmare Sale at Karaka on Monday when selling for NZ$105,000 (£51,626/€64,035).

The colt, who was the only lot to break six figures, was bought by pinhookers Lyndhurst Farm. Out of the Zabeel mare Be Inspired, a sister to Group 3 winner Rainbow Styling, the colt is the sole sale entry by the Group 1-winning sprinter Duporth.

"We really liked his pedigree," said Mark Treweek of Lyndhurst Farm. "He's out of a Zabeel mare, which are always very popular as he's a great broodmare sire, and we have also had reports from friends in Australia that Duporth produces very good sorts.

"He's still a baby but he's agood type with good colour and markings and we're pleased to have got him. He'll be aimed at the Premier Sale at Karaka 2013."

Some of the first southern hemisphere foals to be offered by Coolmore shuttler Mastercraftsman were well received with the son of Danehill Dancer responsible for colts which sold for NZ$70,000 (£34,411/€42,685) and NZ$65,000 (£31,953/€39,636).

Joe Barnes' J and I Bloodstock secured the NZ$70,000 colt, who is out of Dancers World, an unraced half-sister to Group 1 winner Sirmione. The NZ$65,000 colt, who is from the immediate family of Group 1 winner A Little Kiss, was knocked down to Jo and Greg Griffin's Lime Country Thoroughbreds.

Although the median remained level with 2011 at NZ$3,400 (£1,671/€2,073), the aggregate and average dropped by 15 per cent and 18 per cent to NZ$1,689,150 and NZ$10,816 (£5,316/€6,594) for 157 sold. Selling continues on Tuesday.
