Redoute's colt tops Inglis Easter day two

KITCHWIN HILLS got back some of its outlay on yesterday's A$1,875,000 Inglis Easter yearling sale day one top lot, a son of Redoute's Choice, by selling another Redoute's Choice colt for A$1.2m (£733,000, €832,000) to top today's second-session trade.

The bay colt, the first yearling sold by Kitchwin Hills for seven figures, is out of the British-bred Manila mare Asian Reef, whose previous progeny includes Australasian Group winners Before Too Long and Bon Hoffa.

Sydney-based bloodstock agent James Bester was the winning bidder, acting on behalf of undisclosed owners. He said that the colt would remain in Australia, adding: "The horse has an incredible hind leg action, beautiful floating action in front. I don't buy them if they don't have that.

"He has a mother who produced a Group 1 winner and a course record-breaking Group 2 winner by a bread and butter sire. What can she do with Redoute's Choice?"

That colt was the only one who breached the A$1m mark on day two. Next bestwas a Coolmore-consigned Encosta De Lago half-brother to Singapore champion older miler Recast and useful Australian colt Gonski. New South Wales bloodstock agent Tony Bott was the buyer, at A$775,000.

Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell Stud, on the mark yesterday for a A$700,000 Redoute's Choice filly, was prominent again on day two. The operation signed for four lots totalling A$1,545,000, headed by a A$675,000 son of Redoute's Choice and the Last Tycoon mare Tycoon Lil, champion three-year-old in New Zealand in 1997/98.

Darley was registered as the buyer of one lot – as it was in the first session – a A$350,000 Exceed And Excel filly.

BBA Ireland spent A$790,000 on three lots, two fillies by Dehere and Fastnet Rock and a colt by Starcraft, while British agent William Huntingdon signed for an Encosta De Lago colt for A$150,000.

Overall on day two of the sale, 128 lots sold for a clearance rate of 72 per cent. Turnover was A$28,077,500, the average was A$219,355 (down 17 per cent on last year's second session) and the median was A$170,000 (down 15 per cent).
