Awzaan: the son of Alhaarth wins the Mill Reef Stakes at NewburyPICTURE: Mark Cranham
Middle Park hero Awzaan to Uruguay
AWZAAN, winner of the 2009 Middle Park Stakes for Hamden Al Maktoum and Mark Johnston, has been retired to stand at Pablo and Claudia Salomone´s Haras Cuatro Piedras in Progreso, Uruguay.
The five-year-old son of Alhaarth joins a roster of stallions at the stud that includes Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones, who shuttles from Northview Stallion Station in Pennsylvania, and Dr Greenfield, who beat Grandera when successful in the 2001 Dee Stakes for Gerard Butler.
Awzaan swept through his juvenile season unbeaten for Johnston, winning four races that culminated in a three-quarter length victory over Radiohead in the Middle Park Stakes, with Showcasing and Poet’s Voice in arrears. The Shadwell homebred was also successful in the Mill Reef Stakes.
Although he failed to recapture his juvenile form over the next two seasons, he was beaten only half-a-length when third to Delegator in the Listed Dubai Duty Free Cup as a three-year-old.
Awzaan is one of two winners out of Nufoos, a Listed-winning daughter of Zafonic who is from the further family of high-class sprinter Watching.
