Fasig-Tipton Calder topper scores on debut

AL ZIR, who topped this year's Fasig-TiptonCalder Sale in March when selling for $1.6m to John Ferguson, made the perfect start to his racing career on Friday by taking his debut at Newmarket in impressive fashion.

Always prominent, the Saeed bin Suroor-trained son of Medagliad'Oro lengthened in the final furlong to score under hands and heels by four lengths as the 15/8 favourite from Awesome Act.

Bred by Jacks Or Better Farm in Florida, Al Zir is a half-brother to the Grade 1-winning miler Midas Eyes, who now stands in New York, and Grade 3 winner Bayou's Lassie.

He is the sixth foal out of Bayou Plans, a stakes-winning daughter of Bayou Herbert.

Al Zir holds an entry in the Dewhurst Stakes.
