National could decide jumps sire champion

TODAY'S hugely valuable John Smith's Grand National could decide the British and Irish jumps sire championship.

Ballabriggs' victory in the 2011 Aintree marathon - worth £547,267 to the winner this year- gave his sire Presenting the championship last season and, with £485,609 prize-money between the leading four stallions this time around, today's race could prove crucial.

Neither of the two leaders in the 2011/2012 jumps sire championship, King's Theatre (£1,698,639 progeny earnings) or Oscar (£1,535,754), have runners in the National, though Oscar has two of the leadingfancies, Oscar Whisky and Rock On Ruby, in today's Aintree Hurdle worth £90,000 to the winner.

Third-placed Beneficial (£1,399,529) has one runner in the National: last month's Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup runner-up Becauseicouldntsee. Fourth-placed Flemensfirth (£1,213,030) also has one: The Midnight Club, who was sixth when favourite in last year's National.

Fifth-placed Old Vic (£1,074,221) supplied the 2010 National one-two Don't Push It and Black Apalachi and if he were to repeat the feat this year with any of his four representatives - Black Apalachi, In Compliance, Sunnyhillboy and Vic Venturi - he could get into a challenging position for the championship.

Sixth-placed Presenting (£1,042,006) also holds a strong National hand with three runners, all likely to start at odds below 20-1: Ballabriggs, Killyglen and On His Own.

Seventh-placed Accordion (£996,335) has a couple of lively outsiders engaged in the race - According To Pete and Weird Al - who could help him zoom up the leaderboard.
