Figures down at Adena Springs two-year-old sale

Adena Springs Two-Year-Old Sale figures ($)
Year  Cat  Off  Sold  % sold  Aggregate  Average  Median
 2010  46  43  23  53  723,500  31,457  18,000
 2009  70  65  48  74  2,149,000  44,771  36,000

SHARP declines in receipts marred this year's Adena Springs two-year-old sale, conducted by Ocala Breeders' Sales Company yesterday.

The sale, held at Adena Springs South in Florida, is unique among breeze-up auctions as the catalogue comprises homebred lots from Adena Springs owner Frank Stronach.

The 46-strong catalogue was reduced from last year, when 70 were entered, and was way down on the 2008 renewal, when 136 were catalogued.

The recent exploits of last year's Adena Springs two-year-old sale $250,000 top lot – Stately Victor won the Grade 1 Toyota Blue Grass Stakes earlier this month – could not arrest the decline in receipts at this year's renewal.

The clearance rate fell from 74 per cent to 53 per cent, turnover declined by 66 per cent to $723,500, the average was down by 30 per cent and the median was cut in half.

Top lot honours went to Bahia Beach, an Awesome Again filly out of the Alphabet Soup mare Pop Princess, a half-sister to Graded stakes winner Spring Waltz. She was purchased by Ben McElroy for $115,000.
