Bernardini: US Horse of the Year sired his first winner on Thursday

US champion Bernardini sires first winner

US Horse of the Year Bernardini was represented by his first winner on Thursday when Zayat Stables' homebred A Z Warrior won the fifth race at Hollywood Park.

The Bob Baffert-trained filly was prominent for most of the race and eventually edged clear to win as the 6/5 favourite. Out of the stakes-placed Carson City mare, Carson Jen, A Z Warrior is a half-sister to Zayat's Grade 3 winner E Z Warrior.

Bernardini retired to stud as the winner of six of eight starts, including a trio of Grade 1 events; the Preakness Stakes, Travers Stakes and Jockey Club Gold Cup. He ended his career by running second to Invasor in the Breeders' Cup Classic to retire with earnings of $3,060,480.

A Z Warrior is one of eight runners to date by Bernardini, who has 109 two-year-olds in his first crop conceived off a fee of $100,000. The son of A P Indy stood the past season at Darley at Jonabell for $60,000.
