450,000gns Star filly tops day three at Tatts

THERE were no prices to quite match the three 800,000 euros-plus lots seen at Goffs last week, but Sea The Stars' first foals to appear in a British sale ring still captivated buyers at Tattersalls yesterday, none more so than a filly who sold for 450,000gns.

The half-sister to Prix Djebel winner Surfrider was bought by Hamdan Al Maktoum's racing manager Angus Gold but only after shaking off the likes of Native Khan's owner Ibrahim Araci, John Clarke, representing Sea The Stars' owners, Julie Wood's husband Chris, Cathy Grassick and Yvonne Jacques and finally Hugo Lascelles.

"Just like everyone I've been impressed by everything I've seen by the stallion," said Gold of the Norelands Stud offering. "We've got five of our own Sea The Stars foals at home and having looked at Goffs last week and here over the past few days, I don't think I've ever seen a better lot of foals by a first-season sire in terms of quality.

"We tend to buy five or six foals each year and this filly has a great temperament and was a bit of a no-brainer for a racing operation like our's."

Clarke, who bought an850,000 euros son of Sea The Stars at Goffs last week, paid 340,000gns yesterday for a colt son of out of Listed-winning sprinter Ripples Maid on behalf of the six-times Group 1 winner's owner Christopher Tsui and his mother Ling.

"Ling and Christopher Tsui want to help the horse and felt that if breeders were using him at stud they should show their appreciation by buying some of his foals. Their purchases will go to Gilltown Stud," said Clarke

Buta much-vaunted Sea The Stars half-brother to Youmzain and Creachadoir offered by the Castlebridge Consignment for breeder Frank Dunne failed to changed hands when led out unsold when bidding reached 590,000gns.
