Now for the long-term - Lady R is scanned in foal
THE news is good - Lady Rebecca was scanned safely in foal on the morning of Wednesday September 29, a result of her covering with Kayf Tara.
Although the scan was slightly earlier than usual, due to the Tweenhills Stud team heading to the Newmarket sales next week, where they will be flat out both buying and selling yearlings, this is a crunch time of year for broodmare owners.
It is around this point that mares are scanned to be sure they are in foal, and thus a fee for the stallion's services needs paying. Lady Rebecca's scan revealed a mass the size of a rugby ball. Just as it should be.
This scan was a particularly anxious one. Last year, Lady Rebecca, in a quiet, sad, unannounced way, had lost the foal she was carrying to to the leading Irish jumping sire Presenting.
The unexplained nature of the loss, the fact that she is now 18, plus the loss of the remaining twin from an earlier covering with Kayf Tara this year, meant this particular scan came with an element of nervousness.
There still is. Only when Lady Rebecca delivers this long-awaited foal next spring can the Tweenhills team truly relax.
Unlike the other horse in our Born To Run series, the eponymous and independent-minded foal born this year,Lady Rebecca's offspring is most unlikely to head to the sales. Tweenhills boss David Redvers, who bought Lady Rebecca for peanuts and set up the syndicate the raced her during a spectacular career over hurdles, will race the progenyhimself.
Which makes the foal a long-term part of this Born To Run series. Five years from now, it might not even have made its racecourse debut!
